"Why do Sunni Muslims not commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein like Shia do?"
As a convert to Islam and a Sunni Muslim. I love Imam Hussein (رضي الله عنه) and I would have fought with along side him to the death against his murderers and I cry when reading about his martyrdom and I mourn his death. I just don’t believe it’s the correct way to mourn him by cutting my self or innovating in the religion. I mourn him by crying for him and learning about his life.
Sunni are sadden by this. They dont do this as it is not part of Islam. If it was Allah would have ordered all. Best way is to follow the sunnah.
We do not commemorate the martyrdom of Hussein(May Allah be pleased with him)is simply because prophet Muhamed (peace be upon him) didn't do it neither did Ali or Hassan or Hussein or any of Ahlu Albayat(May Allah be pleased with him) do such a thing therefore we as muslims do not have the right to Invent new things in our religion which Prophet Muhamed and Ahlu bayat didn't teach us.
You will see many gatherings for the Zikir of Imam Hussain عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ from the Sunni Sufis Ahle sunnah wa al jamaat

Sunnis do not Wahabi Kharjis and Deobandis why you assign them as Sunnis should we call Nusairis and Druze as Shia then? We distribute food and water, give sadaqah, set up majlis where stories are recited by Khatibs we have Taziya and Urs procession.

Narrated By Nafi': When the people of Medina dethroned Yazid bin Muawiya, Ibn 'Umar gathered his special friends and children and said, "I heard the Prophet saying, 'A flag will be fixed for every betrayer on the Day of Resurrection,' and we have given the oath of allegiance to this person (Yazid) in accordance with the conditions enjoined by Allah and His Apostle and I do not know of anything more faithless than fighting a person who has been given the oath of allegiance in accordance with the conditions enjoined by Allah and His Apostle , and if ever I learn that any person among you has agreed to dethrone Yazid, by giving the oath of allegiance (to somebody else) then there will be separation between him and me."

It seems like everyone wants to be the judge of each other's comments even when they know Allah is the judge of them.
The unknowlegd will say they have knowledge and when they're ignorant they say not.

For everyone who wants to hear this form a sunni perspective: The reason why we don’t follow this is because we don’t mourn more than 3 days. We respect imam Hussain however we don’t believe in praising people too much especially after the prophet. We have limits. Another reasoning it’s because quite a few Sunnis are tryna stay in the safe side by avoiding innovation so celebrating things that’s not prescribed in religion.

1) We do accept Hussain as Imam neither any of the other 12 so called imams of shia. Their concept of imamate is clearly against finality of prophet
hood.
2) The history of shahadat e hussain is so much riddled in lies from both sides that it is impossible to know the truth
3) Quran clearly calls 'ummahahat ul momineen' as Ahle bayt and Shia concept of ahle bayt is completely against Quran
4) All the believes and practices of Shia (all without exception) which are different from mainstream Muslims are heretic and against the teachings of Quran and Sunnah.
5) Shia insult companions of Holy Prophet (sws) which is clearly against teachings of Quran.
As a sunni, everytime i hear about the story of imam hussein (ra), it always brings a heavy feeling into the heart. However we don't commemorate like some shias do (matam), because our body is not our own, but of Allah (SWT).

Sunnis mourn of course, but not by hitting our bodies. Our bodies are amanah and not ours, it is Allah's amanah to us, it is sacred and not to inflicted with anything detrimental. And mind you, we are also shia to Hussein RA.
